Reactive Attachment Disorder

RAD makes it very difficult for foster and adoptive parents' children to bond. Walls have gone up. James writes:

You can't be a normal parent to a RAD kid because of the deep mistrust that exists. A RAD kid doesn't care what you think about his or her behaviour--so most behavioural programs simply don't work. These kids tend to need tremendous amounts of structure and nurturing. Often, parents find that they need to treat these kids as if they are the age at which the child emotioinally "froze". RAD children often appear to have no conscience. They seem to care about only themselves.

What are your strategies to help your child develop emotionally and create healthy ties with you and with other appropriate people?

RAD

My adopted son has RAD and everyone says I have the patience of a saint because they could not put up with what he says and does. He has been in my home for almost 4 years now and he still has a hard time showing emotions except anger. I have spent countless hours of rocking, holding, hugging, kissing him. I beleive him and I have fromed a bond but he still does not show any emotions to anyone else he comes in contact with. Through therapy I have found out so much more about RAD. I have read a ton of books about RAD. But the main key to rad kids is PATIENCE and LOVE.

Amen. Unconditional love

Amen. Unconditional love when the behaviour is completely un-lovable.
