Moments of Compassion

This summer my family was in Denmark for a reunion. My little family was sharing a little house with my brother and his family - his wife and son (a boy of 9) and daughter (a girl of 4).

For some reason, when we travel, "Monica" (our daughter) seems to have far fewer tantrums. It runs counter to the idea that our kids need as much stability and routine as possible, but there you have it.

There were several occasions when my niece was in a great deal of distress--usually when over-tired. On more than one occasion, "Monica" took it upon herself to comfort my niece and went as far as offering her blanket-something that she is almost never without (she'd bring it to school if she could) to try and make her feel better.

In those moments of compassion, I see what truly lives inside of "Monica".

My wife and I went out of our way to let her know what a good job she was doing with her little cousin.
