Histories

Recently I was talking to my kid's therapist and we were talking about history. We were going through my kid's history and it affected me in a visceral way. I had always known basically what had happened to her before we fostered her, but I had never turned it into a timeline. It was a little shocking.

When you are feeling worn out and worn thin because your child is behaving badly, take a minute if you have his or her history documented. Write it down, look at what happened and when. You might understand a little better.

Be compassionate.

The Kite Runner

The Kite Runner is a film that parents of Children of Trauma will deeply empathize with. It represents, at its core, many of the things we need to help our children work through. It tells a story of horrific abuse - physical, emotional, and sexual. It explores the shame that comes with rape--and not just the emotions of the person who was abused. It weaves a narrative around loss of parents and loved ones. But it also tells a story of unabiding hope for the future.
